“I BELIEVE IT’S TIME FOR A REVOLUTION”
A love letter from a gay writer to his factory worker father with traditional macho values. A realization that the oppressive forces are not the ones we thought. Is this where the real potential for revolution in the West lies?
Louis’ father lives near the bottom of the French class system. He’s a hard-working factory laborer, shaped by a childhood filled with violence, and struggles with mild alcoholism. The fact that Louis, his son, turns out to be gay makes their relationship even more turbulent. But Louis’ father is also a fighter—he does everything he can to save money and provide for his family. One day, however, his back is crushed in a workplace accident.
He believes he’s done his duty. He’s gone to work, paid his taxes, and followed the law. So he expects the state and society to offer a helping hand. After all, that’s how a welfare state is supposed to work.
But the social and healthcare systems that should have supported Louis’ father are no longer there. Austerity politics dominate, and he is left to feel the consequences. The family begins to fall apart in the hands of the injured father. That drives Louis—his gay, writer son —to raise his voice. To protest with a power and clarity that demands to be heard.
French author Édouard Louis’ striking novel is here transformed into a stage monologue performed by Evrim Benli. The monologue is both a declaration of love for his father and a furious indictment of the system that makes life unbearable for the most vulnerable.
